about

Songs from Night Lunch’s Fire in the Rose Garden (October 20th, 2023 via Mothland) could be described as lush flowers under the neon lights of a derelict metropolitan strip. On this sophomore long-player, the Montréal off-kilter pop outfit unveils chiaroscuro sonic palettes from a forgotten era, fully embracing yester-melodies, their harmonic counterparts, as well as a subdued Wall of Sound gleam shining atop arrangements spanning from early R&B winks all the way to post-punk stare downs.

In sharp contrast with their 60s via the 80s candy pop-informed sound, the four-piece sings about poignant tales of heartbreak and made-up thrillers of deceit, though also offering the occasional positively-charged message of love and trust. Whether playfully lamenting amorous debacles or solemnly rejoicing in cathartic joy, Night Lunch deals in advanced escapism, engaging with fantasies from a parallel timeline where love is an almighty fire, matching tattoos replace wedding rings, and roses grow in luxuriant landfills under the midnight Sun.

As an arbor to such imagery, Fire in the Rose Garden’s production is all at once genuinely simple and strangely over-the-top, showcasing immaculate, yet supple grooves for the bass to walk on, elaborate harmonic cathedrals where vocal, keyboard and guitar melodies linger along delicate streams of reverberation. The self-produced album sees Night Lunch unearth their D.I.Y. roots, all the while finding ephemeral peace amidst testing times.

about

Night Lunch Montreal, Québec

The musical escapades of Night Lunch elegantly evade the standard tropes of modern indie music by dint of a verve that’s just quirky enough to deceive the unsuspecting ear. In the shadowy corners of a city where sin never sleeps, the bunch writes clair-obscur pop songs, in essence, engaging with romantic themes as well as with phantasmagorical imagery. ... more
